Korean Food Sales Boosted by K-Pop Movie

Just when you thought the global fascination with South Korean culture couldn't get any bigger, along came the Netflix megahit KPop Demon Hunters.

The movie and its songs have ticked a lot of boxes for K-pop fans around the world. It tells the story of a three-piece girl group who sing songs and fight demons.

But it's not just the action and the tunes that those fans have picked up on they've also noticed the food that the characters are seen eating during the movie.

On YouTube, two content creators named Sam and JJ gave themselves a challenge to eat "every single food from KPop Demon Hunters."

Their first task was to watch the movie "a million times," they joke. They then traveled around Seoul trying to tick off everything they saw the animated characters eat and drink.

Other fans have written recipe blogs based on those foodstuffs, including things like kimchi, hotteok pancakes, gimbap filled rice rolls wrapped in seaweed and instant ramyeon noodles.

As a result, South Korea's largest convenience chain, CU, says that sales of some of these products have soared since the film's release on June 20.

CU said that between July and August, purchases of gimbap by foreign customers increased by 231%. Over the same period, ramyeon sales increased by 99%.

BGF Retail, which runs CU stores, said: "Convenience store gimbap has become a unique cultural experience for foreign visitors."

It's not possible to directly attribute sales of these products to the success of the movie, but it does seem likely to have had an effect, particularly as K-pop fans are known for their intense devotion.

South Korean culture has grown in popularity across the world in recent years as more and more people have become acquainted with K-pop, K-movies and K-beauty.

And the country has also seen an increase in foreign tourists. This July, the Korea Tourism Organization said that 1.73 million foreign tourists visited the country. This was 23% higher than the same month last year.

Is Social Media the World's New Recipe Book?

Once upon a time, if you wanted to find meal ideas, you'd look in a recipe book. Nowadays, you'll find food videos all over social media. In fact, 93% of Americans say they have seen food content on their social media feeds!

But people aren't just watching and salivating they're getting inspired by these videos too, according to a new survey.

The survey of 5,000 adults in the US, done by Talker Research, found that 77% of people have made a decision about what to eat based on foods that are trending online.

Almost six out of 10 people even said they've saved enough social media recipes to fill a cookbook of their own!

And almost half of the survey participants said they often share recipe ideas with friends online.

Food videos may also be making it easier for people to discover different meals from around the world.

According to an Australian food website called Taste, the recipes that have done the best on its social media accounts in 2025 include Hawaiian garlic pizza bread, Vietnamese garlic butter chicken noodles and South African peri-peri oil a chili oil with ginger, garlic and vinegar.

The site also said that its air fryer recipes have been popular.

Another dish that went viral on TikTok in recent months is called Marry Me Chicken. It's chicken cooked in a creamy tomato sauce and it's said to be so good that if you make it for someone, they might want to marry you!

1. Have you tried any viral online recipes? Were you happy with the result?

2. Do you have any special recipes that have been in your family for a long time?

3. Do you ever share photos of your food on social media?
